How it works in Canada

Mental health care is organised by each province and territory. Provincial health plans cover doctors and psychiatrists, and some publicly funded therapy programmes. Most private psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors are paid privately or through workplace benefits.

Your family doctor

A family doctor or walk-in clinic can assess you, discuss medication, check for physical causes and refer you to a psychiatrist or local programmes. Some provinces also have free health lines (811 in several provinces) staffed by nurses.

Publicly funded programmes

Several provinces offer free structured therapy, often CBT-based, for anxiety and depression, through community health services or hospital programmes. Ask your doctor what is available in your area.

Crisis support

  • 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline: call or text 988, any time.
  • Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 for young people.
  • Emergency: 911.

Workplace benefits

Many employers provide benefits that cover a set amount of psychology or counselling each year, plus employee assistance programmes with free sessions. Check your benefits booklet.

South Asian communities in Canada

Large communities in Brampton, Mississauga, Surrey, Calgary and beyond mean more community organisations and some multilingual services. Even so, many people struggle to find a therapist who speaks Punjabi, Urdu or Pashto and understands family expectations.

Therapy in your language

Online therapy lets you choose a professional who speaks your language and fits around shifts and family life. Fees on Therapy O'Clock are shown in Canadian dollars before you book, and many benefit plans reimburse sessions with eligible practitioners. Check your plan's rules.
